How Much Does the BCBA Exam Cost? Application and Exam Fees (2026)

As of June 2026, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) charges a $245 certification application fee for the BCBA exam, billed separately from the $125 Pearson VUE exam appointment fee you pay when you schedule your test. That puts the baseline cost to sit for the BCBA exam once at $370, before any coursework, supervised fieldwork, or study materials. If you do not pass, retaking the exam costs $140 for a new BACB retake application plus another $125 Pearson VUE appointment fee, for $265 per attempt, and the BACB permits up to 8 attempts within a 2-year authorization window. Once certified, maintaining your BCBA credential requires a $215 recertification application fee every 2 years, along with 32 continuing education units (CEUs) per cycle, including 4 ethics CEUs and 3 supervision CEUs for certificants who supervise RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees. These figures come directly from the BCBA Handbook (updated June 2026) and the BACB’s published fee schedule at bacb.com. Here is the full breakdown, fee by fee.

Fees current per the BCBA Handbook updated June 2026, checked September 2026, per the BCBA Handbook and the BACB’s published fee schedule. BACB fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable and are payable in US currency only. Fees are subject to change; confirm the current amount in your BACB portal account before paying.

BCBA Application Fee: $245

The $245 certification application fee is paid directly to the BACB when you submit your BCBA Certification Application through your BACB portal account, after you have met the current eligibility requirements for one of the four eligibility pathways. Until payment is made, your application status shows as awaiting payment. Once you pay, the BACB gives you up to 90 days to submit supplemental documentation, such as official transcripts and fieldwork verification forms, before you would need to submit a new application and pay the fee again. From there, BACB staff take up to 45 days to review a complete application and issue a determination. This $245 fee covers the application review only. It does not include the cost of actually sitting for the exam.

Pearson VUE Exam Appointment Fee: $125 (A Separate Charge)

Once your application is approved, you schedule your exam appointment directly with Pearson VUE, the testing vendor that delivers the BCBA exam. Pearson VUE charges $125 for every BCBA examination appointment, collected at the time of scheduling. This fee is in addition to the BACB application fee, not a part of it, so budget for both. Depending on where you test, you may also owe applicable sales tax, value added tax, or GST, which Pearson VUE collects at scheduling if required by local law. Add the $245 BACB application fee to the $125 Pearson VUE fee and the minimum cost to take the BCBA exam one time, assuming you pass, comes to $370.

What Retaking the BCBA Exam Costs

If you do not pass, retaking costs more than most candidates expect, because two separate fees reset with every attempt. The BACB charges a $140 examination retake application fee, and Pearson VUE charges its standard $125 exam appointment fee again, for $265 per retake. Under BACB policy, you may retake the exam up to 8 total times within a 2-year authorization period that starts from your initial application approval, with a mandatory 30-day wait between attempts. There is no discount for repeat attempts. Someone who tests three times before passing, for example, pays $370 for the first attempt and $265 for each retake, or $900 total in BACB and Pearson VUE fees alone.

Rescheduling or canceling an already-scheduled appointment carries its own cost, separate from a retake. Changing an appointment 30 to 5 days out costs $59; 5 days to 48 hours out costs $69; and Pearson VUE does not allow any change inside 48 hours of your appointment, with no refund issued. Canceling or rescheduling 31 or more days ahead carries no fee.

Recertification Fee and CEU Requirement (Every 2 Years)

BCBA certification is not permanent. Every two years, you must submit a recertification application, pay the associated fee, and have entered enough continuing education units into your BACB portal account to qualify. The recertification application fee is $215 for BCBA certificants and $290 for BCBA-D. To recertify, you need 32 CEUs earned within that specific two-year cycle, including at least 4 ethics CEUs. If you supervised the ongoing practice of one or more RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees at any point during the cycle, you also need 3 supervision CEUs. CEUs cannot be carried over from a prior cycle or banked in advance of the next one.

If you miss your recertification date but have completed all required CEUs, the BACB gives you a 30-day reinstatement window to recertify, for a $50 late fee on top of the $215 recertification fee. Miss that window and your certification lapses; getting recertified after that point means reapplying under whatever eligibility requirements are current at that time, not the ones you originally met.

Other BCBA Fees to Plan For

A few smaller fees round out the full cost picture. A returned check or failed payment carries a $45 insufficient funds fee. Requesting a written verification letter of your certification status, for an employer or licensure board, costs $25 per letter. A replacement certificate issued after a legal name change costs $35. Voluntarily placing your certification on inactive status, for example during parental leave or a career pause, costs a one time $50 application fee, though returning from inactive status within two years is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BCBA application fee the same as the exam fee?

No. The $245 BACB certification application fee and the $125 Pearson VUE exam appointment fee are two separate charges, paid to two different organizations. Together they bring the minimum cost of a single attempt to $370.

How much does it cost to retake the BCBA exam?

$265 per attempt: a $140 BACB retake application fee plus a new $125 Pearson VUE exam appointment fee. Both fees are charged again for every retake, up to a maximum of 8 attempts within your 2-year authorization window.

How much does it cost to maintain BCBA certification?

Recertification costs $215 every 2 years and requires 32 CEUs completed within that same cycle, including 4 ethics CEUs and, if you supervised anyone during the cycle, 3 supervision CEUs. A $50 late fee applies if you reinstate within 30 days of a missed recertification date.

Are BACB fees refundable?

No. Per the BCBA Handbook, all BACB fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and the BACB accepts US currency only. Pearson VUE’s appointment fee follows its own cancellation schedule rather than a refund policy.
