What to Bring to the MBLEx: Test Day Rules and What to Expect
Test day for the MBLEx follows a fixed script set by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) and delivered at Pearson VUE test centers. Per FSMTB’s Candidate Handbook, effective July 2025, you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time; arriving later than that is treated as a no show, which expires your Authorization to Test (ATT) and requires a brand new application and fee before you can reschedule. The appointment itself is scheduled for two hours (120 minutes): up to 5 minutes for a Security and Confidentiality Agreement, up to 5 minutes for an Information Survey, and 110 minutes to answer all 100 exam questions. Check in includes a digital photograph and biometric security measures such as palm vein recognition. You need two forms of identification that exactly match the name on your ATT, and everything else, phones, notes, watches, food, goes into a provided locker before you enter the testing room. What to Bring: Two Forms of Identification
FSMTB requires two forms of identification at check in, and the name on both must exactly match the name on your MBLEx application and your Authorization to Test. Your primary ID must contain your photograph and signature, must be government issued, and must not be expired: a state driver’s license, a state issued ID, a passport or Certificate of Naturalization, or a military ID. Temporary or renewal paperwork and digital licenses or IDs are not accepted. Your secondary ID must generally contain your signature and must not be expired: a signed Social Security card, a signed work or school ID, a signed bank card, or any ID from the primary list you did not already use. A military ID or Employment Authorization Document with a bar code is accepted as secondary without a signature. Staff can ask for additional proof, and you will be refused access if you cannot satisfy them.
Arrive 30 Minutes Early or Risk a No Show
You must arrive at the report time on your confirmation notice, at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Arrive later and the test center will not admit you; per the handbook, a late arrival is treated as a no show, and a no show expires your Authorization to Test. If you reapply after a no show, you submit a new application and pay the fee in effect at the time, which is $265 as of September 2026, the same as a first attempt. Build in extra travel time rather than counting on any flexibility past the 30 minute mark.
Check In: Photograph and Palm Vein Biometrics
Check in includes a digital photograph and biometric security measures, such as palm vein recognition, to confirm your identity. Staff can walk you through check in steps, but they cannot answer questions about exam content or screen prompts. Translators and interpreters are not permitted at any point, including check in, so a language barrier that prevents you from checking in on your own means you will be turned away. Once your exam begins, you cannot leave the building, and leaving the testing room for any reason, including an unscheduled break, requires biometric reverification before you can go back in.
Locker Storage and Prohibited Items
The test center provides a locker for your personal belongings, and you must leave everything except your two IDs and your locker key outside the testing room. FSMTB is not responsible for anything lost or stolen there. Accessing your locker during the exam is not allowed except during an approved break for something like medication; doing so means you cannot continue, and FSMTB records the result as a fail due to an incomplete exam. Cell phone access is strictly prohibited the entire time you are at the test center, including during any unscheduled break.

Your Two Hour Appointment: Agreement, Survey, and Exam
The full MBLEx appointment is scheduled for two hours, or 120 minutes, in three parts: up to 5 minutes for a Security and Confidentiality Agreement, up to 5 minutes for an Information Survey, and 110 minutes for the 100 question exam. FSMTB’s handbook is explicit that not completing all 100 items within the 110 minute allotment results in a failing exam, regardless of how many questions you had answered correctly. One detail candidates miss: you may not write on the erasable note board during the pre exam agreement and survey; attempting to before the timed exam begins gets the note board removed, you escorted from the room, and a full reapplication and fee before you can try again.
No Scheduled Breaks Unless Approved in Advance
FSMTB does not build scheduled breaks into the 110 minute exam period unless a break was approved as a specific testing accommodation during your application process. Take an unscheduled break anyway and you do so on your own time: the exam clock keeps running, and security protocols, including biometric reverification, apply when you exit and reenter the testing room, with no time added back. Treating the 110 minutes as one uninterrupted block, rather than planning a break, protects the minutes you have.
The Computer Adaptive Format: Forward Only, No Skipping
The MBLEx is a fixed length, computer adaptive test (CAT): every candidate answers exactly 100 questions, and per the handbook you answer each question in the order it is presented, with no skipping ahead. Under CAT, a correct answer brings a slightly more complex question next; an incorrect answer brings a slightly less complex one, so the exam continuously adjusts to your demonstrated ability as you move through it. Because there is no going back, a rushed answer is locked in the moment you submit it.
Getting Your Results
The MBLEx never reports a numeric score. FSMTB reports your result as pass or fail only, and if you fail, the test center gives you a diagnostic report of your performance across each content area before you leave. Separately, FSMTB sends your official pass or fail result electronically to the state regulatory board or agency you designated, within five business days of your exam date. A passing result supports a license application in that state but is not itself a license; you still complete that state’s own licensure process afterward.
