The Six Eligibility Requirements

Age and Education
A candidate must be at least 18 years old when submitting the RBT certification application, and must have at least a high school level education or the equivalent. Both facts are confirmed by a designated Attesting Certificant, not self-reported by the applicant, as part of the RBT Certification Application Attestation form.
Background Screening
A candidate must complete and pass a criminal background check comparable to those required for home health aides, child care professionals, and teachers in the community where services will be provided. As of September 2026, the BACB requires this check no more than 180 days before paying for the certification application. Fingerprinting is not required by the BACB itself, though state or employer requirements may vary.
A candidate must also complete and pass a check of applicable abuse registries, using the BACB’s own regulatory phrasing, no more than 180 days before paying for the certification application. If a candidate resides in a state or province without an abuse registry, or the information is unavailable to the organization conducting the check, the attestation form allows that to be marked as unavailable rather than blocking the application.
40-Hour Training
Every RBT candidate must complete a 40-hour training program that meets the requirements described in the BACB’s current 40-hour training curriculum outline. As of September 2026, the training must span no less than 5 days and no more than 180 days from its start date to its end date, with both dates counted in the total. This training may be delivered by an employer, a university, or an online training program; the BACB itself does not provide the training, issue certificates, or recommend specific training providers. A certificate of completion from the training provider is uploaded with the certification application.
Initial Competency Assessment
After completing the required 40-hour training, a candidate must demonstrate they can competently perform the tasks on the RBT Initial Competency Assessment, completed with a qualified assessor no more than 90 days before submitting the certification application. The completed assessment is uploaded directly with the application.
Application Fee and Timeline
As of September 2026, the 2026 Certification Application Processing Fee is $65, paid directly to the BACB by credit card or check in US currency only; the BACB does not accept cash. Once a candidate starts an RBT Certification Application, that application stays active for 90 days. If all requirements are not met and documented within that window, the application expires and the candidate must submit a new one, including paying the $65 fee again under whatever requirements are current at that later date. How to Apply, Step by Step
Applying for RBT certification follows a fixed sequence in the BACB portal. First, create a BACB portal account using your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued identification, since a mismatch will prevent you from taking the exam later. Next, complete the RBT Certification Application Attestation form with your Attesting Certificant, gather your 40-hour training certificate, and complete the Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor. Note that the Attesting Certificant and the assessor may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the applicant. Once every document is ready, start the RBT Certification Application, upload all required documents, and submit payment. The BACB advises allowing about two weeks for staff to process the application, after which you will either receive scheduling instructions for Pearson VUE or feedback on what remains outstanding.
Once approved, a candidate has 12 months from the approval date to schedule and sit for the exam.
