BCBA Certification Requirements: Degree, Coursework, and Fieldwork (2026)
As of September 2026, the BACB certifies BCBA candidates through one of four eligibility pathways, per the BCBA Handbook (updated June 2026): a degree from an APBA or ABAI accredited or recognized program (Pathway 1), graduate behavior-analytic coursework totaling 315 classroom hours (Pathway 2), faculty teaching and research (Pathway 3), or 10 years of postdoctoral experience (Pathway 4). Every pathway also requires supervised fieldwork, either 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (500 hours under the postdoctoral pathway), plus passing the BCBA exam. The certification application costs $245, paid to the BACB, and once your application is approved you have a 2-year authorization window in which to take the exam up to 8 times. Coursework counted toward Pathway 2 must have been completed within 10 years of the year you submit your application. Starting January 1, 2027, the BACB consolidates these four pathways into two. 4 Pathways, One Shared Core
Every pathway requires the same three ingredients in different forms: a qualifying degree, behavior-analytic content, and supervised fieldwork, followed by passing the BCBA exam. The table below compares what each current pathway asks for.

Pathway 1 covers most current BCBA certificants, since it builds coursework directly into an accredited degree program rather than requiring it separately. Pathway 2 is the route for candidates whose graduate degree came from a program without that accreditation but who complete the required coursework elsewhere. Pathways 3 and 4 serve a much smaller group: faculty who teach and publish in behavior analysis, and licensed professionals with a decade of relevant postdoctoral practice.
The 315-Hour Coursework Requirement (Pathway 2)
Candidates using Pathway 2 must complete graduate-level coursework covering 6 content areas, for a total of 315 classroom hours, at an institution with a designated Pathway 2 Program Contact who can verify it. Each course must be passed with a grade of C or higher, or a pass in a pass or fail system.

These 315 hours must have been completed within 10 years of the year you submit your BCBA Certification Application. For example, applying in 2026 means only coursework completed in 2016 or later counts. Coursework older than that, even if it originally satisfied a prior requirement, no longer qualifies.
Fieldwork: Supervised vs Concentrated
Three of the four pathways offer a choice between two fieldwork types. Supervised Fieldwork requires 2,000 total hours with a minimum of 5% of those hours spent in supervision. Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork compresses the requirement to 1,500 hours, but doubles the supervision proportion to 10% of hours. The postdoctoral pathway uses a separate, smaller requirement: 500 hours of Supervised Fieldwork, which can only begin after the 10-year postdoctoral experience requirement has already been met. Under any pathway, your supervisor must be an BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions, either certified at least one year and meeting the BACB’s ongoing supervision CEU requirement, or certified less than one year and receiving monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.
The Application Timeline: Fee, Documents, and the 2-Year Clock
You submit your BCBA Certification Application and pay the $245 fee to the BACB once you have met your chosen pathway’s requirements. After payment, your application status shows as awaiting documents, and you have 90 days to submit supporting materials, such as official transcripts and signed Fieldwork Verification Forms. Miss that 90-day window and you must submit a new application and pay the fee again. Once your documents are in, BACB staff take up to 45 days to review a complete application. If approved, you receive an email within 24 to 48 hours with instructions to schedule your exam through Pearson VUE, and your 2-year authorization window begins on the date of approval.
