CCMA Exam Requirements: Who Qualifies and How to Apply (2026)
Every path to the NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam starts with a high school diploma or equivalent, required for every NHA eligibility path. From there, per NHA’s Candidate Handbook (updated June 2026), you satisfy one of two pathways. The training program pathway requires completing a medical assistant training program from an accredited or state recognized institution within the last 5 years; formal military medical services training also qualifies. The work experience pathway requires no formal program at all: 1 year of supervised medical assisting work experience within the last 3 years, or 2 years within the last 5 years. California residents applying for CCMA under the work experience pathway face a stricter standard: a minimum of 2 years of work experience within the last 5 years, with no 1-year-in-3 option. High school students who have not yet graduated can sit for the exam under a Provisional Certification if graduating within 12 months; full certification still requires meeting a standard pathway, and the provisional credential lapses 12 months after the exam date if that has not happened. Step 1: The High School Diploma Gate
A high school diploma, a General Education Development (GED) test, or another equivalency test recognized by your state of residency is required for every NHA eligibility path, CCMA included. If your documents are not in English, NHA requires a translation from a service approved in the United States for legal or governmental documents, available upon request. This is the one requirement the Provisional Certification route (see below) lets you defer, not skip.
Step 2: Choose Your Pathway

NHA’s Candidate Handbook also lists two narrower training routes that apply across most NHA exams, CCMA included: a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship; an employer-based training route where the coursework portion is completed first and on-the-job training is verified and reported to NHA within 180 days of the exam date; and a pre-externship route where a candidate tests before completing an externship, with completion verified within 90 days of the exam date. These are less common paths into CCMA than the accredited-program and work-experience routes above, but they are available if your training happened through an apprenticeship or an employer program with an NHA agreement in place.
If your training program completion date is more than 5 years before your registration date, you no longer qualify under the training program pathway and must instead meet the work experience requirement.
The California CCMA Exception
California is the one state where NHA applies a different standard to the work experience pathway. Most candidates nationwide can qualify with either 1 year of work experience within the last 3 years or 2 years within the last 5 years. California residents applying for CCMA under the work experience pathway must have a minimum of 2 years of work experience as a medical assistant within the last 5 years immediately preceding their exam date; the shorter 1-year-in-3 option is not available to them. If you trained through an accredited program instead of work experience, the standard 5 year training program pathway applies regardless of state.
Provisional Certification: For Students Who Have Not Yet Graduated
If you are scheduled to graduate from an accredited high school, GED program, or other recognized high school equivalency program, you may take the CCMA exam and receive a Provisional Certification up to 12 months before your graduation date, provided you meet all other certification eligibility requirements. A Provisional Certification is a placeholder: it lets you test close to when you finish training even though you have not yet met the high school diploma requirement for a standard, full certification. Full certification still requires meeting a standard pathway; the provisional credential lapses 12 months after the exam date if you have not graduated and converted it by then, and it cannot be renewed or reinstated. Once you graduate, you must apply to convert your Provisional Certification to a Full Certification, providing proof of graduation and written proof that you meet the training or work experience requirement described above.
If You Do Not Meet a Standard Pathway
NHA’s Candidate Handbook allows candidates to request an exception to eligibility requirements by submitting an Exceptions Request/Appeals form with supporting documentation. The request is reviewed by the appropriate Disciplinary and Appeals Committee, which issues a written decision; that decision can be submitted to the Certification Governing Board for reconsideration at its next regularly scheduled meeting, held approximately 3 times a year. NHA states that it reserves the right to uphold eligibility requirements as established by the Certification Governing Board, so an exception is a review process, not a guaranteed path around the standard pathways.
